    Description

The Nairobi Gallery, located along the Uhuru Highway/Kenyatta Avenue roundabout next to Nyayo House, was opened to the public on January 24, 2006. The Gallery holds temporary exhibitions on different subjects.

The Nairobi gallery is housed in a building that once served as the Provincial Commissioner’s (PC) office. The building was constructed under the supervision of the then government architect C. Rand Overy. During the colonial period the settlers referred to the PC’s building as “Hatches, matches and Dispatches” at it was where births, marriages and deaths were recorded.

The exterior of the building is decorated with columns, friezes and pediments of natural stone, and the entrance leads into an octagonal shaped hall covered with a dome shaped ceiling. The surrounding rooms branch off from this central space. The interior walls of the building have a lime plaster finish, the floor is of stone and the window and door frames are of teak wood.
